My family has done okay with our traveling and vacationing—my wife Biba and I have taken our kids to the odd Caribbean island for a midwinter break now and again, and earlier this year I was, frankly, surprised at how well Esme (she’s 10) and Guy (he just turned 8) took to a week in Paris. But when blue-skying a recent family getaway, I realized that something had been preying on my conscience: In our zeal to show our children the world, we’d been neglecting the riches closer to home. Don’t get me wrong: They’ve skied in Vermont, we’ve beached it in Florida; Washington, DC remains a favorite escape for monuments and museums. But this feeling of mine was personal: I grew up amid the endless horizons of sunflowers and wheat of the North Dakota high plains, occasionally shipping out to my sister’s horse ranch in western Montana to help with haying—or simply to ride horses and ATVs around the northern foothills of the Rockies. It seemed almost a dereliction of duties that my kids hadn’t yet so much as caught a fish or seen a shooting star.

All of which led us to spend a few late-summer days at The Ranch at Rock Creek—a wonderment of mountains and meadows, pastures and forests, creeks and moose and deer and elk and bald eagles and an enormous array of birds in the Gold Country outside Philipsburg in western Montana, halfway between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. (Montana is one of the last places in the lower 48 states where animals still outnumber people.) Of course, that’s just the landscape, the terrain—but it’s beyond spectacular. It’s what I grew up with, more or less, but now that I’ve become fully citified, it’s almost too much to behold. Then there’s what the Ranch’s owner, Jim Manley, did with all that terrain. In decades of exploring high-end travel options all over the world, I’ve never seen a place that melds the spirit of ranch life: rustic cabins, horses, vittles, campfires, freedom, self-determination—the whole yeehaw agenda, writ large—with exquisite service, across-the-board expertise, and the absolute pinpoint-perfect amount of indulgent luxury.

That last part might be the trickiest: Anybody—or any travel conglomerate—can lard up a property or experience with glitter and glimmer, from thread counts to rare wines to personal concierges. But to do all that and still make you feel like you’re roughing it, truly going full cowboy and cowgirl, the last great American heroes in the country’s last, best place? Now that’s a trick. We arrived mid-afternoon, mid-week, and were soon pointed down the hill and across a wooden bridge for an hour or so of creekside plein air painting (with—as with everything here—masterful guidance and instruction, though I’m certainly not about to quit my day job). After some snacks and drinks, we ambled back to our lodgings—a three-bedroom, two-fireplace luxury home disguised as a rustic cabin, with an adjacent lake and dock and gazebo. (Full capacity at The Ranch at Rock Creek—in cabins, lodge suites, and luxurious canvas tents—is 125, though because of the vast expanse of the place, it feels like a third or a quarter of that.) Already waiting for us inside were my wife’s favorite wine, my children’s favorite snacks, and the most smartly curated small library of handsome bound volumes, from Turgenev to Lakota histories to seminal photo books on the American West, first editions of epic regional chronicles, and crowd-pleasing coffee-table photo books. Bathrooms were the size of Manhattan studio apartments; bedrooms were even bigger.
